The 2008 SSPHA conference was a huge success! DJ Smith did a fantastic job of coordinating everything. Presenters were all very well prepared and had very informative discussions.
Some highlights from the conference include the entertaining session "Dispatches from the Land of Pig Candy" by Fred Sauceman, Associate Professor of Appalachian Studies, East Tennessee State University. Professor Sauceman had our mouths watering from his photos and descriptions of unusual foods from the South.
The Hilton provided some very nice breakfasts (I hear one could even get grits upon special request!) as well as tasty snacks at breaks including a soda-float day!
Knoxville did not fail to impress with it's eclectic combination of historic buildings along side state-of-the-art-complexes. Thursday night's festivities for the local college kids just a few blocks from the hotel had to be seen to believe. Though, technically, Thursday night was not just for the local college kids, it's actually billed as an event for people of all ages from all over the county. The original purpose was to help revitalize the downtown area. The Mast General Store and Downtown Grill on Gay Street were also fun diversions.
